Free State High cruises in final home swim quad

The Free State High boys swimming and diving team once again was phenomenal Wednesday.

So, what’s new, right?

In their final tune-up before the big two — the Sunflower League and the Kansas state meets — the Firebirds were as special as ever, taking first in 11 of the 12 events and crushing a tough field in their final home quadrangular.

Free State tallied 452 points. Olathe South had 380, Manhattan had 254, and Lawrence High finished fourth with 219 points.

So how loaded are these Firebirds? Eight individual swimming events were contested Wednesday. All eight were won by one of six different Firebirds.

Oh yeah, Free State also won all three relays.

Yeah, it’s a safe bet that they’re ready for the postseason.

“They’re swimming really well,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “We’re just getting ready for the next one and the next one. Our focus is to just keep going.”

Among the highlights was senior Alex Brunfeldt, who bettered his school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:35.07. If he manages to match that time at state, it would break the Kansas state record.

Also setting a school record was freshman Chase Torgerson, who finished the 100 backstroke in 56.97.

Besides those two, Chris Wolff, Nathan Schriner, Anthony Portela and Chris Sellon all won individual events for the Firebirds.

“I think our training’s finally paying off,” said Wolff, who took won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. “We’re starting to see what we can do. It’s always good to go into the championship meets with some confidence.”

Free State's Chase Torgerson emerges from the water during the 100-yard backstroke. Torgerson had a school-record time of 56.97 in the event Wednesday at Lawrence Aquatic Center.

Lawrence High’s Nick Leet was the only non-Firebird to take home a first-place finish, beating out 10 competitors to win the diving competition. He finished with 243.55 points, nearly 15 better than the second-place finisher.

“He’s a lot more consistent,” LHS diving coach Ryan Adams said. “If there were rankings in diving, he’d be top four (in the state), and he wants to move up on that.”

LHS senior Ian Legler took second in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:08.78. Schriner won that event in 1:08.56.

Both city swimming squads now prepare for the Sunflower League meet, which starts Feb. 6 in Olathe. Free State has won every meet it has participated in except for one — the prestigious 27-team Mo-Kan Invitational.

“And you know what’s great?” McDonald said. “The guys are willing to do whatever event it takes to build the team and have the team win. We’re real pleased with that.”
