City mostly unfazed by wintry mix

Mother Nature continued to throw a mixed bag of weather at Lawrence and northeastern Kansas on Monday as light snow fell throughout the day and temperatures plummeted to single digits overnight.

Less than an inch of snow had fallen on Lawrence by Monday night, but streets and area roads still required treatment and icy patches caused problems for some motorists.

Slick conditions contributed to a three-vehicle collision shortly before 9 a.m. Monday that injured two people on U.S. Highway 40 about six miles west of Lawrence, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Chaitanya Gampa, 24, Lawrence, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where she was in fair condition Monday night, hospital officials said. The second victim, Sarah M. Kellogg, 25, Lecompton, was treated and released.

Lawrence street maintenance workers were working 12-hour shifts treating roadways, said Chuck Soules, the city’s director of public works. The crews had been at it since Saturday night, when rain turned to freezing rain that continued throughout much of Sunday.

“When the storm first started, the rain didn’t freeze until it sat on the ground,” Soules said. “That allowed us to keep ahead of the storm.”

The streets were in pretty good shape, Soules said.

North-central Kansas was hit especially hard by the storms. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius declared a state of disaster emergency for seven Kansas counties: Geary, Jackson, Osage, Pottawatomie, Riley, Wabaunsee and Shawnee.

Ice buildup on power lines is blamed for causing power outages to 30,000 residents in those seven counties.

While the snow was expected to end by this morning in Lawrence, chilly conditions will continue today. The temperature is expected to drop to 9 degrees, 6News weather forecaster Ross Janssen said, with wind-chill factors below zero.

Today’s high will be 24 degrees. Temperatures will climb as the week continues, Janssen said.

Sunday's ice storm left most of Lawrence covered in icicles, including the Jayhawk statue in front of Adams Alumni Center on the Kansas University campus. Snow accumulated on top of the ice Monday, and temperatures continued to drop.
