MINNESOTA ? The Detroit Pistons gave the Minnesota Timberwolves a taste of physical basketball, but with one shove too many.

Latrell Sprewell’s driving layup with 57 seconds remaining helped the Timberwolves to an 80-79 victory over the Pistons Friday night.

Sprewell took a feed from Kevin Garnett along the right baseline and laid the ball off the glass in traffic.

After both teams missed baskets, Chauncey Billups was called for an offensive foul with 2 seconds remaining as he tried to clear out Garnett and Sam Cassell on a 10-foot jumper.

Billups put his forearm into Garnett’s chest and released his shot, which went in. But referee James Capers immediately signaled Billups for the foul, and the Wolves inbounded the ball and ran out the clock.

“I had both Sam and KG up in the air,” Billups said. “I don’t know what they figured.”

Cassell pointed out that Garnett would have been able to block Billups’ shot had Billups not put the forearm into him. But that argument was lost on the Pistons — coach Larry Brown refused to meet with the media after the game — and possibly even on Garnett.

“We got lucky,” Billups quoted Garnett as saying when the two shook hands after the game.

Clippers 93, Jazz 82

Los Angeles — Quentin Richardson scored 15 of his 29 points in the first quarter and added eight rebounds and six assists as Los Angeles beat Utah. Elton Brand had 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists, going 12-for-14 from the free throw line to lead the Clippers. Utah center Greg Ostertag, playing in is 600th NBA game, had 16 points and 12 rebounds but missed six of eight free throws.

Mavericks 106, Bulls 93

Chicago — Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points and Michael Finley had 17 of his 23 in the second half to help Dallas defeat Chicago for its seventh straight win. The Bulls received a career-high 23 points from rookie Kirk Hinrich, but lost their sixth straight game. Hinrich also had a career-best 11 rebounds.

Grizzlies 109, Kings 95

Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis established the longest winning streak in franchise history, winning its seventh straight. Mike Miller scored a season-high 27 points and Jason Williams added 25 points and 10 assists for the Grizzlies. Pau Gasol added 20 points.

Magic 98, 76ers 93

Philadelphia — Tracy McGrady scored 33 points and Orlando defeated Philadelphia as the 76ers lost starters Derrick Coleman and Kenny Thomas to injuries.

Heat 85, Nets 64

Miami — Wang Zhi-Zhi outscored Jason Kidd and sparked Miami to a victory over New Jersey, which lost its fifth in a row. With starting center Brian Grant slowed by a knee bruise, the 7-foot-1 Wang came off the bench in the first half and finished with 11 points in 11 minutes .

Celtics 100, Wizards 89

Boston — Paul Pierce scored 24 points, Mike James added 16 and Boston held off a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Washington. It was the second straight win after five consecutive losses for the Celtics.

Bucks 98, Raptors 86

Milwaukee — Reserve guard Desmond Mason scored 20 points to lead Milwaukee past Toronto. The Raptors, who have lost four in a row, received just eight points from Vince Carter in his return from a quadriceps injury. They fell to 20-21.

Rockets 78, Pacers 74

Indianapolis — Steve Francis had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists to lead Houston over Indiana. Yao Ming scored five of his 17 points in the final 4:15 to hold off Jermaine O’Neal and Indiana, which lost for the first time in six games and just the second in 14.

Hornets 97, Nuggets 91

New Orleans — Jamaal Magloire had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Darrell Armstrong added 18 points and five steals to lead New Orleans past Denver. Forward P.J. Brown scored 16 and reserve forward Robert Traylor added 13.

Knicks 96, Hawks 94

Atlanta — Stephon Marbury banked in a go-ahead three-pointer in the final minute, his second one down the stretch, and New York held on to beat Atlanta. Atlanta’s Jason Terry missed an open three that would have tied it with about 10 seconds left.
