Coffee giant opens third store in Lawrence

Now there is another way for shoppers to pick up coffee when they go to the grocery store — in a cup instead of a can.

Starbucks Coffee Co. on Monday opened its third Lawrence location with a new shop inside the Dillons grocery store at 3000 W. Sixth St.

The Lawrence store became just the second Dillons in Kansas to include a Starbucks.

“It is another feature that we have added that offers another convenience for shoppers,” said Dennis Gaschler, a spokesman with Dillons. “It is an enhancement to the one-stop-shopping experience that we try to create.”

A Dillons in Wichita became the first to offer the gourmet coffee shop in December. Gaschler said the Hutchinson-based grocery chain was evaluating other possible locations. He said there were no plans to open Starbucks shops in Dillons’ three other Lawrence stores.

The shop is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. It’s menu includes all the items at a traditional Starbucks.

Nick Davis, a spokesman for the Seattle-based coffee giant, said Starbucks now had about 1,500 licensed stores in North America, with most in grocery stores and airports.

“It gives us an opportunity to reach more customers and try to surprise our existing customers by having a shop in a location they might not expect,” Davis said.

Gaschler said Dillons officials chose the Lawrence store for the new concept because it had space to expand and already was being reconfigured for new products, like a new 1,600-item line of natural and organic food offerings.

Starbucks also operates a store at 647 Mass. and inside SuperTarget, 3201 Iowa.
