Athletes of the week

Anthony Portela

Free State

Class: Junior

Sport: Swimming

The week: It was just one of those days for Portela. The Firebird junior set two school records Tuesday at the team’s first home meet of the season. In the 200 individual medley, Portela finished in 1:59.11 to take first place. Then, in the 100 freestyle, Portela won in 48.71. He also had a hand in first-place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. Behind Portela’s record-setting day, Free State won its fifth straight meet, easily beating Topeka Hayden and Washburn Rural.

Lauren Kracl

Eudora

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

The week: It wasn’t her top offensive output to date, but it was still a pretty good week for the 6-foot senior. The Cardinals went 2-0 in the week, earning Frontier League victories over Anderson County and Spring Hill. Kracl was, as always, the heart of Eudora’s offense, scoring 27 points Friday against Anderson County and 26 Tuesday against Spring Hill. Eudora High improved to 7-2.

Comment: “If you watch the game, there are times where she’ll step clear away from the post and out to the perimeter to take the ball and take control of the game,” Eudora coach Cara Kimberlin said. “That’s what a leader does.”
