George A. Blevins

Graveside services for George A. Blevins, 82, Eudora, will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sutton Cemetery in rural Douglas County.

Mr. Blevins died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community, Lawrence.

He was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Lawrence, the son of Clarence and Mary Alice (Clark) Blevins. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School. He moved to Eudora in 1951.

Mr. Blevins served in the Army during World War II. After the war he worked in the fire department at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant at De Soto. During the Korean War he worked in security at Hercules until it was deactivated. He worked at the fire department at the Olathe Naval Air station until it closed.

Mr. Blevins also worked for the Lawrence Water Department before retiring from the Fort Leavenworth Fire Department in 1976. After retiring, he was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Eudora.

Mr. Blevins was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Eudora. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Lawrence.

He married Doris Fern Lederer on Aug. 21, 1943, in Baldwin. She died July 23, 2002.

Survivors include two sons, George R., Lawrence, and Gordon, Topeka; a daughter, Gloria Jacob, Lawrence; a sister, Deanie Singer, Northglenn, Colo.; a brother, Jack, Topeka; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society or the American Diabetes Assn., sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
