Sports complex director dies of gunshot wounds

? The director of the Jackson County Sports Complex Authority has died, nearly two weeks after he was shot in what police believe was an attempted carjacking.

John M. Friedmann, 71, died late Friday at Truman Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized since being shot at a car wash Dec. 28. He never regained consciousness.

Friedmann had been executive director of the authority, which oversees the operations of Arrowhead and Royals stadiums, since 1990.

Police said Saturday they had few leads in the shooting.

Family members gathered Saturday at the Authority’s offices to grieve.

“He certainly didn’t deserve this,” said daughter Mary Friedmann, of St. Paul, Minn. “He was a beautiful man and a beautiful father. He treated everyone, from the politicians to the helpers, with dignity.”

Friedmann’s family and Sports Authority officials are offering a reward fund, which has grown to $12,000, for information in the shooting.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
