Chiefs’ Morton enjoys diverse interests

Wide receiver dabbles in real estate, nutrition, show business

? There’s probably only one way to make sure Kansas City wide receiver Johnnie Morton sees this year’s Super Bowl — have the Chiefs play in it.

Let others plop down in front of the television to watch a game. For Morton, life’s too short and there are so many other fascinating things to absorb his time.

Morton is more likely to be hunting for a house to buy and remodel or trying out a new recipe than sitting in the stands. He knows where the Food Network is on his cable dial, but isn’t sure about ESPN.

“I’ve only seen two games from beginning to end my entire life,” said the lean-as-a-greyhound Southern California native. “I love playing football. But I never watch it. I never watch sports.”

He studies the game that’s provided a wonderful income and enabled him to explore such diverse interests as acting, cooking and commercial real estate.

“I love to do film study. I love figuring out things about my opponent,” said Morton, whose brother Chad is a Redskins running back. “I like the strategy and the competition. But I’m not much of a spectator. It’s a great sport and I love playing it. I just don’t watch it.”

It’s a wonder he finds time to cram football into his busy life. But after eight successful years in Detroit and one disappointing season in Kansas City, he heads into today’s playoff game against Indianapolis feeling like a new man. He had 50 catches for the Chiefs this season for 740 yards and four TDs, and eight carries for another 94.

“This is the best time I’ve ever had playing football,” said Morton, who was born in Torrance, Calif. “Not only that, but I’m so much more comfortable. Not only in the system and my teammates, but just living here. I’m kind of introverted, not real outgoing socially.

“But now I know everyone. It’s all come naturally to me now. I feel like I’m part of the team.”

In his first year with Kansas City last season, Morton had nagging injuries, including an Achilles’ tendon, and caught only one TD pass in an unfamiliar offense.

He’s healthier and far more productive this season.

“He learned and adapted to how we practice,” coach Dick Vermeil said. “He wore down last year. He was worn out by the end of the season. He eats all these special seeds and that kind of stuff.”

While fans and other players might park themselves in front of the TV for Monday Night Football, Morton often is checking out real estate deals online.

“I’ve done a few projects where I buy properties, remodel them and sell them,” he said. “I don’t consider it a job because I enjoy it so much. In the future, what I want to do is get some investors and have a real estate development where you build a small community.”

He can recall almost the exact instant he got hooked.

“It was when I first bought a home and I sold it for a profit,” he said. “I realized if I’d done a few more things to improve the quality of the home I could have sold it for more. So I bought another house, did that and then my third house I bought it, remodeled it and turned a 30 percent profit in about a year and a half. That’s when I really got excited about it.”

Another keen interest: food and nutrition.

Strong, healthy bodies are common in NFL locker rooms, but Morton’s lean-muscled, 190-pound physique stands out. He’s an expert on the care and feeding of the human body.

“I am very careful what I eat. I’ve studied nutrition and the effects of vitamins and minerals for a long time,” he said.

He also owns an ice cream store — the Cold Stone Creamery — and hopes to expand.

Then there’s show business — a natural for somebody who’s a member of the Screen Actors Guild and has modeled.

Morton appeared as himself in the movie “Jerry Maguire,” which starred Tom Cruise, and in several episodes of the soap opera “Young and the Restless.” He also was once listed by People magazine as one of the country’s most eligible bachelors.

And, he’s working on developing a celebrity interview show. Morton said he had discussed his ideas with a television network, but wasn’t ready to disclose details.

“I think it will happen,” he said. “It involves celebrities and interviews, but with a big twist on it.”

Fans will have to tune in.
