Lawrence native killed

An argument between two friends ended in the shooting death of a Lawrence native early Thursday at a Topeka apartment complex, Topeka Police said.

Adrian M. Laughead, 38, who was born in Lawrence but lived in Topeka, was shot once shortly after midnight Wednesday at the Oak Tree Square/ Plaza View Apartment complex, 1306 S.W. Harrison, and died as authorities arrived on the scene, police said.

James C. Rollins, 57, who lives in the apartment where the shooting occurred, is in custody at the Shawnee County Jail in connection with one count of reckless but unintentional second-degree murder. Kansas law defines the charge as “the killing of a human being committed unintentionally but recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

Amanda Ruth, 38, Laughead’s girlfriend of seven years, said an argument between Laughead and Rollins erupted late Wednesday when the two, along with Rollins’ wife, were drinking at the apartment.

Laughead, Rollins’ neighbor, had been living at the complex since July, Ruth said. Ruth — who also lives at the complex, but not with Laughead — said she was not at the apartment when Laughead was shot.

Ted Laughead, Adrian Laughead’s father and a retired military officer living in Topeka, said his son moved around the country and the globe during his early years.

“He was one of those people you like right off the bat and got along with everybody,” he said. “He was our first-born and he meant a lot to us.”

Adrian Laughead was a 1983 graduate of Hirschi High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he was a sports and culinary enthusiast. He attended Kaw Valley Chef School in Topeka and was a cook for several national chain restaurants.

Ruth said she and Laughead were talking of getting married next year.

Rollins, whose bond has been set at $100,000, is scheduled to appear at 3 p.m. today before a judge to face charges, Shawnee County Jail officials said.
