Toreros’ Padgett proud

Melissa roots for brother with Kansas

There was a time Kansas University freshman David Padgett got tossed around on the basketball court by his big sis.

That was long, long ago, said Melissa Padgett, a senior on the San Diego University women’s basketball team, which lost to Kansas, 64-45, Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

“You can even ask him, I used to kick his butt until he grew, like, a foot,” said Melissa, a 6-foot-1 forward. “Then my shot started getting swatted over the neighbor’s fence. My glory days were done.”

Not that she holds a grudge. In fact, she was so proud of her brother’s progress that she drew his No. 44 on the back of her sneakers.

David, who eventually sprouted to 6-11, might dominate the driveway games in the summertime, but that’s the only place he holds ill will for his sister. He wants her to win when she’s playing anyone else — that includes Kansas.

“All the Padgetts are rooting for USD,” Melissa said. “Even David.”

The entire Padgett family sat behind the Toreros’ bench Saturday, capping a family weekend in Lawrence. David scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the KU men in an 86-79 victory Friday over Villanova. Melissa was in the crowd for that one.

Saturday was her turn. The senior was one of the few bright spots for the Toreros, logging team highs in rebounds (six) and blocks (two) while sinking two of three shots on strong post moves identical to her brother’s.

“It was really a blessing to be able to play here,” she said. “We wish it would’ve worked out a little bit better in our favor, but it was a great opportunity and experience for our whole team.”
