Shape of dogs’ ears influences how we view them

The shape of a dog’s ears has a great influence on how we view the breed.

Even if you don’t have a clue how to read the body language of a dog by observing the carriage of its ears, the shape and position of a dog’s ears can greatly influence your sense of a dog’s intelligence and disposition.

Dogs with erect ears such as corgis and malamutes, always appear alert, confident and intelligent. Those with semi-erect ears, like collies and my own wirehaired fox terrier Scooter, also look vigilant but friendlier than those with what some breeders call “Viagra ears,” always up!

Those dogs with the droopy ears such as basset hounds, beagles and Labradors, seem to be friendly and peaceful.

Unfortunately, ear style is a very poor barometer of a dog’s personality. For example, basset hounds have energetic, friendly dispositions, but their hangdog ears give them a mournful, lethargic look.
