No. 7 OU overcomes Princeton
OKLAHOMA CITY ? In only its second game of the season outside its own gym, No. 7 Oklahoma needed some help from an emerging standout to beat Princeton, 58-55, Saturday in the All-College Classic.
Having played seven of its last eight games on the road, Princeton quieted the Ford Center crowd of about 10,000 with a 60-percent shooting effort in the first half, largely on layups inside.
But Oklahoma sophomore DeAngelo Alexander had a season-high 22 points — 12 coming in the second half — and was selected as the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.
It was the third time this season he has led the Sooners in scoring. DeAngelo is getting a lot more confident, Oklahoma coach Kelvin Sampson said.
“I can tell because he’s finishing plays,” Sampson said. “DeAngelo is a really good basketball player. I thought his defense in the second half was outstanding.”
The win was No. 400 for Sampson, who is 224-81 in his 10th season at Oklahoma. Sampson has guided the Sooners to the NCAA Tournament each of the past nine seasons.
Sampson said the Sooners still were a work in progress.
“It will be a while. We’re so new,” said Sampson, who starts a pair of sophomores and a freshman.
OU (10-0) led by as many as 10 points twice in the second half, but Princeton (5-5) rallied to within three with 2:50 left.
