Fowl plentiful in Kansas

Late-season waterfowl hunters have something to look forward to during the New Year — ample waterfowl in the Sunflower State.

As of Wednesday, Wildlife and Park reported waterfowl numbers in Kansas numbering 303,450 geese and 141,160 ducks statewide.

Currently, the top three areas for geese are Quivira National Wildlife Refuge with 172,000, Glen Elder Reservoir with 43,000 and Milford Reservoir with 12,350.

The top three areas for ducks are Milford with 33,000, Glen Elder with 20,000 and Kirwin Reservoir with 18,000.

Duck season will end Jan. 11 in the Late Zone. In the High Plains Zone, the duck season will close Tuesday then reopen Jan. 17 and run through Jan. 25.

Canada goose season runs through Feb. 1, white-fronted goose season through Jan. 23 and light goose season runs through Feb. 1.

A federal conservation order also extends light goose hunting through April 30.
