Defense powers OHS; Bulldog girls rout Cyclones

? Defensive pressure was key for Ottawa High in its 69-46 win Friday over Baldwin.

The Cyclones forced steal after steal with a vaunting corner press, creating chaos for the Bulldogs and easy Cyclone baskets.

Lee Baldwin ripped into Baldwin’s defense for a game-high 17 points, and Clint Bones added 14 for Ottawa (5-1).

Bulldog coach Jeff Haas still is trying to replace the offensive production of Andy Hannon, who is out because of a broken right hand.

“At this point, we have to have a scoring-by-committee system,” Haas said.

Chris Irick led the way for the Bulldogs (2-5) with nine points, seven of which came in a one-minute span in the first quarter.

The Bulldog girls (5-1) frustrated Ottawa, outscoring the Cyclones 22-3 in the first quarter and grabbing 11 steals. The Bulldogs had 22 steals in the contest.

“Defensively, I thought tonight was the best I’ve seen us execute all year,” Baldwin coach Eric Toot said.

Baldwin High's Micah Mason (32) shoots against Ottawa's Andrew Maxwell. The Cyclones beat the Bulldogs, 69-46, Friday in Baldwin.

The Bulldogs stymied the Cyclones (5-2) on defense, too, which didn’t thrill Ottawa coach Clint McCullough.

“They took us out of everything. I saw panic in their eyes early on,” McCullough said. “Baldwin’s a great measuring stick. We know where we’re at now.”

Kari Garrison had a team-high 12 points for Baldwin. Caitlin Smith led the Ottawa charge with 11 points.

The Baldwin boys and girls will play host Tuesday to Paola; the Ottawa boys play host Tuesday to Spring Hill while the girls travel Friday to Paola.
