Bookman wins Big 12 in record time

? Kansas University sprinter Leo Bookman won the 200-meter dash title Saturday at the Big 12 Conference indoor track and field championships.

Bookman claimed more than just the league title. The senior’s time of 20.58 seconds set Big 12 meet and Devaney Center records.

It was the fastest time in the nation this year and the third-fastest time in the world, according to the IAAF.

“I knew that I had to run a fast time coming into the race, and I didn’t like the fact that I was ranked third in the nation,” Bookman said. “It is a record that I have been eyeing for a long time, and it felt great to break it. I just can’t wait to run at the NCAA Championships.”

Bookman also finished third in the 60-meter dash in 6.76.

“I thought it was a great race,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said of Bookman’s record-setting performance.

“Leo works hard and deserves everything. He did an excellent job.”
