HomeTown Film brings Hollywood to Lawrence

Roll out the red carpet and state your picks.

Oscar night is coming to town.

HomeTown Film will be host to a party during the live Academy Awards telecast 7 p.m. Sunday, complete with paparazzi and snarky entrance commentary.

“We’re just looking to have a great time with this,” says Chris Ordal, HomeTown Film founding member.

The event — billed as “Red Carpet Oscar Night” — is a benefit for the Kansas University Graduates in Film and Theatre Assn. Proceeds will be used to bring a professional film speaker to Lawrence.

Filmmakers Kevin Willmott and Matt Jacobson (“CSA: The Confederate States of America”) will have the party at downtown club Eight One Five, 815 N.H. Inside, attendees will be able to watch the awards show on a 14-foot screen and enter an Oscar pool.

But outside, they’ll have to brave the red carpet.

“We’ve got velvet ropes, photographers, the whole bit,” Ordal says. “People should definitely come dressed up.”

And ready for some tongue-in-cheek fun.

Local producer Chris Martin will be taping a parody of the E! Channel’s awards show coverage as partygoers arrive.

“The night wouldn’t be complete without Joan Rivers,” says Ordal, referring to E!’s resident fashionista.

A door prize for “Best Oscar Night Garb” will be awarded.

Ordal says his goal is to bring people together.

He says, “Community, after all, is a big part of film and art.”
