Athletes of the week

Alex Brunfeldt

Free State

Class: Senior

Sport: Swimming

The week: Brunfeldt contributed to Free State’s first-ever team state title by breaking the state record in the 500 freestyle at the state swimming championship preliminaries Friday, taking first in 4:35.34. He then outdid even himself Saturday, winning the championship final with another state-record time of 4:35.02. Brunfeldt also took second in the 200 freestyle and was the last leg of the 400 freestyle relay that placed first and clinched the state title for the Firebirds.

Ross Starcher

Tonganoxie

Class: Junior

Sport: Wrestling

The week: Starcher improved his record to 40-2 on the season with a first-place showing at the Class 4A regional in Hiawatha. Starcher won all four of his matches by fall — three of them in the first round — including a revenge victory over Louisburg’s Chad Roberts in the final. Roberts, along with Lawrence High sophomore Nolan Kellerman, account for Starcher’s only two losses this season. Starcher will be one of three wrestlers representing Tonganoxie at the state meet starting today in Wichita.
