Seabury girls win first

Take the monkey off of the back of Seabury girls basketball coach Eric Nelson.

Even though it came in the final game of the regular season, the Seahawk girls are finally in the win column after beating Heritage Christian, 26-13, Friday night.

“It felt good,” Nelson said. “They’re a lot better a team then they have shown. We made a lot of progress and it’s nice to finally get that first win. We were due.”

The effort of Seahawk Lindsey Ahlen was one of the biggest reasons the Seahawks are 1-12 instead of 0-13. The sophomore forward recorded 16 points — three more than the Eagles’ total — to go with 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

“She had a monster game,” Nelson said. “She came to play tonight.”

Ahlen was joined in the monster-game department by junior Laura Frizell, who, despite only scoring two points, grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds.

Seabury started the game with a 6-0 run and managed to keep Heritage Christian (8-13) in its rear-view mirror the rest of the way.

On Fan Appreciation Night, the stands were packed at the Seahawks’ gym with patrons busy appreciating their school’s efforts.

Heritage Christian 40, Seabury boys 34

The Seahawk boys didn’t fare as well in a 40-34 loss to the Eagles.

Seabury coach Marcus Heckman was pleased with the shot selection but not amused by the numerous baskets his team failed to knock down.

To no avail, the Seahawks (3-12) cut a 13-point deficit to just four points late in the fourth quarter.

“It was one of those games that by the time we realized the situation, it was too late,” Heckman said.
