Carter placed on injured list

Toronto — All-Star guard Vince Carter was placed on the injured list by the Toronto Raptors on Friday because of a sprained left ankle.

Carter is expected be out two to four weeks, Raptors coach Kevin O’Neill said Thursday.

Carter was hurt in the fourth quarter of Toronto’s 86-82 loss to San Antonio on Wednesday night and had to use crutches after the game.

Carter, who missed the final six games of last season after rolling the same ankle, is averaging 21.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

Lewis’ widow bid to reopen suit nixed

Boston — The legal battle over the death of Boston Celtics captain Reggie Lewis ended Friday, 11 years after he collapsed during a pickup game.

The state Appeals Court rejected a bid by Lewis’ widow, Donna Harris-Lewis, for a third trial in her suit against Lewis’ cardiologist, Dr. Gilbert Mudge.

Lewis collapsed and died while shooting baskets with friends at Brandeis University on July 28, 1993. Harris-Lewis alleged in her suit that Mudge failed to diagnose a lethal heart condition.

Nuggets claim Doleac on waivers

Denver — The Denver Nuggets were awarded center Michael Doleac on a waiver claim Friday, scrapping the New York Knicks’ plans to re-sign him.

Doleac was to join the Nuggets for their game Friday night in Orlando. To make room for him on the active roster, center Francisco Elson was placed on the injured list.

Doleac averaged 5.0 points and 4.6 rebounds in 46 games for the Knicks.

Memphis’ Miller on IL

Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Miller will miss the next five games after being placed on the injured list because of back spasms.

Miller, who has averaged nearly 12 points and four assists this season, left in third quarter of the Grizzlies’ 109-92 win over Dallas on Tuesday.

In his place, the Grizzlies activated rookie Troy Bell.

Olowokandi activated

Minneapolis — The Minnesota Timberwolves activated center Michael Olowokandi from the injured list Friday after he missed 35 games because of a right knee injury. Guard Darrick Martin, whose second 10-day contract expired Friday, was released to make room for Olowokandi.
