Donald R. Hummels

Mr. Hummels died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan.

He was born June 30, 1936, in Morris, Ill., the son of Raymond and Helen (Kamm) Hummels. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1967, a Master of Science degree in 1968 and a doctorate in 1969, all from Arizona State University. While at the university, he also worked for Motorola Inc. for 13 years.

Mr. Hummels became an assistant professor in the Kansas State University electrical engineering department in 1970. He was promoted to associate professor in 1974 and professor in 1981. He was department head from 1982 to 1989 and was appointed to a LeRoy Paslay Professorship in 1988. He retired in May 2001.

He received several teaching awards, including the Eta Kappa Nu Distinguished Faculty Award, James L. Hollis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, Myers-Alford Memorial Teaching Award and Robert R. and Lila L. Snell Distinguished Career Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

He married Katherine “Kay” Bossi on March 2, 1957, in Joliet, Ill. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Susan J. Schulteis, Perry, Iowa, Jeanne M. Wallace, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Jill Hummels, Lawrence; two sons, Donald M., Glenburn, Maine, and Mike R., Adel, Iowa; two sisters, Charlotte Codack, Berwyn, Ill., and Helen LaBounty, Greeley, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the KSU Foundation for the Donald R. Hummels Electrical and Computer Engineering Scholarship Fund, sent in care of Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan 66502.
