Families attend services on anniversary of fire

Victims’ families and survivors of a nightclub fire that killed 100 people marked its one-year anniversary by making a pilgrimage to the site where The Station club once stood in West Warwick, while others gathered at a Mass to remember their loved ones.

The Feb. 20, 2003, fire, which also injured 200 people, started when a band’s pyrotechnics set fire to flammable foam placed around the stage as soundproofing. The one-story wooden club burned to the ground.

Visitors brought flowers, balloons, pictures and other mementos to the site, where a ring of crosses formed a memorial around what once was the nightclub’s perimeter. Many walked from cross to cross reading messages left for the victims.

Filipino conjoined twins survive third operation

Twins from the Philippines joined at the tops of their heads survived their third major operation Friday, the riskiest yet in the long process of giving them separate lives.

After a nine-hour operation, 22-month-old Carl and Clarence Aguirre were wheeled to the pediatric critical care unit to begin adjusting to rerouted circulation systems, said Pamela Adkins, spokeswoman for Montefiore Medical Center.

No detailed comment on the results of the surgery was expected before a news conference today.

One of the surgeons, Dr. David Staffenberg said at least one more operation would be necessary before the twins can be separated.

Heinz recalls pesto that includes unlisted nuts

H.J. Heinz Co. is recalling tens of thousands of jars of Classico brand pesto sauce because the label does not list pine nuts as an ingredient.

People with an allergy to nuts could suffer a life-threatening reaction if they ate the sauce.

Several thousand cases of the sauce were made over a two-day period in December and were probably distributed nationally, Heinz said Friday.

The recall affects 10-ounce jars of Traditional Basil Pesto Sauce and Spread with UPC code 411296 or lot numbers VA3M08 or VA3M09.

Customers can return the product to the store for a full refund.
