Seabury boys fade in delayed Barstow escapade

In an odd boys basketball game between Seabury Academy and Kansas City (Mo.) Barstow, it was proper the contest ended with a buzzer-beater.

And, after finally completing a delayed game that began more than a month ago, the Knights and their fans celebrated a 30-28 Barstow victory.

When the power went out in Seabury’s gym Jan. 16, the game was stopped in its tracks with 3:43 left in the third quarter and Barstow (2-16) clinging to a 20-19 lead.

The contest resumed Wednesday night when, with 1.3 seconds remaining and the game tied at 28, over a month’s worth of waiting ended when Barstow’s Joe Fox knocked in a short jumper after a football pass from Andrew Pass.

“I thought we were going into overtime,” Seabury freshman Scotty King said. “I think everybody thought that. We just fought for a quarter and a half, and it all ended with that one shot.”

King led the Seahawks (3-12) with 11 points, including three three-pointers.

Adam Davis officially finished with nine points, but he never touched the court Wednesday. Davis, a sophomore guard, has been sidelined because of illness.

All of his points came Jan. 16 — before the lights went out.

“I thought given the fact that Adam Davis is out, we were the better team,” Seabury coach Marcus Heckman said. “If we would have played a full game, I think we would have pulled away.”

Heckman said he wasn’t putting extra pressure on his players to make up for Davis’ absence.

“You let it happen naturally,” Heckman said. “When the situation presents itself, they’ll do the right thing.”

Seabury will close its regular season Friday when it plays host to Heritage Christian, then the Seahawks begin Class 1A regionals Monday at Kansas School for the Deaf.
