Rosemary Martin Kerle

? Memorial services for Rosemary Martin Kerle, 73, Washington, D.C., were Monday at the Washburn University Memorial Union in Topeka.

Ms. Kerle died Dec. 6, 2003, at her home.

She was born Oct. 5, 1930, in Lawrence, the daughter of Albert B. and Harriet (Bush) Martin. She attended elementary schools in Lawrence and graduated from Topeka High School in 1948 and Washburn University in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in French. She completed her master’s degree in Middle East history at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1962.

Ms. Kerle worked for the federal government for 25 years. Since 1987 she had been an editor for the American Jail Assn. She began the cartoon strip “Whittington, the Jailhouse Cat” in 1989 for American Jails magazine, the publication of the American Jail Assn.

She married Kenneth E. Kerle on Sept. 1, 1950. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a brother, Maurice Martin, Tyler, Texas.

The family suggests memorials to an animal shelter or humane society of the donor’s choice.
