Flames engulf house in Douglas County

Firefighters responded to a house fire Monday night in southern Douglas County, and some were expected to remain there much of the night.

The first firefighters to arrive at the fire at 261 E. 1250 Road said the house was engulfed by flames. Fire departments responding were Willow Springs and Palmyra townships and Baldwin. The Kansas Fire Marshal’s office also sent an investigator.

No other information was available Monday night.

Philosophy lecture focuses on life, death

“Love and Death in Ancient Philosophy” will be the topic of a lecture tonight at Kansas University.

Tom Tuozzo, associate professor of philosophy at KU, will deliver the 17th annual James E. Seaver Lecture at 8 p.m. in Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union.

Tuozzo will discuss how philosophers Plato and Epicurus dealt with the issues of love and death.

The free lecture is delivered each year by a KU humanities scholar in midcareer. It is named for Seaver, who directed the KU western civilization program for 27 years before retiring in 1984.

Bar association leader to visit law school

Dennis W. Archer, president of the American Bar Assn., will speak with students and faculty Wednesday at Kansas University.

Archer, the first black to lead the American Bar Assn., will attend an informal coffee with minority student groups, address several law classes and have lunch with faculty members.

Archer was mayor of Detroit from 1994 to 2001 and was a Michigan Supreme Court justice from 1985 to 1993.

Wednesday’s events are not open to the public.

Applications due for volunteer award

The application deadline for the annual Spirit of Caring Award for charitable giving and the promotion of volunteerism is approaching.

Businesses must apply for the award by Friday. It is given annually by United Way of Douglas County and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce.

The award will be given in four categories, based on number of employees. Winners will be determined by the amount of charitable donations and in-kind donations to local nonprofit organizations during 2003, as well as efforts by the businesses to promote volunteering.

Winners will be announced April 23.
