Governor stays steadfast on plan for state schools

? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius said Friday she wasn’t backing away from any portion of her $304 million education plan, despite efforts by a Senate committee to reduce the burden to taxpayers.

The governor wants to raise the state’s taxes on sales, property and personal income and dedicate the new revenue to raises for teachers and helping poor and minority students perform better on tests.

Legislation embodying the plan has begun moving through committees toward the full Senate.

“I’m encouraged that this is progress, that legislators are really taking seriously the need to move forward on an education plan this session,” Sebelius said at her weekly news conference.

As amended and endorsed Thursday by the Senate Assessment and Taxation Committee on Thursday, the bill would yield just $251 million over three years.

“It’s quite feasible to start the plan and look for alternative sources of revenue,” Sebelius said. “We basically have a two-year period to make up that revenue if people want the entire program to move forward.”
