Jayhawks hoping for offensive improvement in Texas

? Kansas University softball coach Tracy Bunge will be looking for more offense when the Jayhawks play six games in the Fastpitch Express Classic this weekend.

Kansas won only two of six games when it opened the season last weekend in Tempe, Ariz., mainly because of a .137 team batting average.

KU’s lone offensive threat in Arizona was sophomore Serena Settlemier. After taking a medical redshirt in the 2003 season, Settlemier hit three home runs — including a grand slam — and a double for a team-leading .357 batting average and 1.071 slugging percentage.

No other Jayhawk player has a batting average higher than .250.

Settlemier also is a pitcher, but isn’t expected to hurl this season because of the arm injury that caused her to miss the ’03 season.

Pitchers Kara Pierce and Kassie Humphreys were mostly effective on the mound during the opening weekend by holding opponents to a batting average of .196.

Pierce, a senior, has a 2.00 earned-run average with 17 strikeouts in 18 innings. Humphreys, a freshman, has recorded 21 strikeouts in 20 innings and a 2.25 ERA. She earned her first KU win Sunday against No. 20 Arizona State.

KU will meet Kentucky and UT-Arlington today. Saturday’s foes will be Colorado State and North Texas. Sunday, the Jayhawks will tangle with Bethune-Cookman and UT-San Antonio.
