Baldwin undisputed league king

Bulldogs wrap up Frontier title with wins over archrival Eudora, nemesis Paola

? How sweet it must have felt for the Baldwin High wrestling squad finally to have Paola’s shoulders squarely on the mat.

Baldwin hadn’t won a dual meet over Paola, the Frontier League’s perennial power, since 1989. But Thursday at BHS, the Bulldogs finally topped the Panthers, 33-28, scratching an itch that had been nagging for 15 years.

BHS then closed out its senior night and an undefeated Frontier League season, and earned an undisputed league crown by topping archrival Eudora, 63-15.

The Cardinals also fell to Paola, 51-18.

For the Bulldogs, who finished with a 15-5 overall dual record and 9-0 Frontier League record, it was a wonderful way to send off their four seniors, who combined to go 5-1 on the night.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Baldwin coach Kit Harris said. “Paola’s been our nemesis for quite a few years now.”

As expected, Baldwin’s battle with the Panthers (10-6, 7-2) was a struggle to the end. Only three classes were decided by pin, and sophomore Mark Jehle, in the dual’s opening match at 103 pounds, was the lone Bulldog to pin his opponent.

But the turning point seemed to be at the 171-pound class. Baldwin’s Kyle Flory, the defending Class 4A state champ, and Paola’s Nathan Payne, the defending 5A champ, locked horns.

This time, Flory prevailed, earning the clincher with two points on a near pin with just 30 seconds left in the third period. He won 3-2 after trailing most of the match.

Baldwin High's Kyle Flory, top, makes his final moves before pinning Eudora High's Loni Ogden. The Bulldogs beat the Cardinals and Paola in wrestling action Thursday at Baldwin.

“I was kind of waiting him out,” said Flory, who went 1-1 against Payne last year.

The Panthers won by decision at 189, but it still clinched the dual for the Bulldogs, who were up by 14 points with just two classes left.

“It’s only fitting that Kyle Flory had a huge win in that dual on senior night,” Harris said. “He and Derek Lang have really been the cornerstone of our program for four years now.”

Flory, now 33-3 on the season, also pinned Eudora’s Loni Ogden. Lang went 2-0, too, improving his record to 37-2 for the season.

Baldwin High's Steve Hamilton, top, wraps up Eudora High's Ryan Pittman. The Bulldogs beat Eudora and Paola in a double-dual Thursday in Baldwin.

“They’re always big point-getters for us,” Harris said. “We can always count on real consistent performances from them. They’re great wrestlers.”

In the Baldwin-Eudora nightcap, the Cardinals (7-12, 1-8) forfeited four classes as Baldwin cruised. The Cardinals were helped by pins from Josh Barr and William Bock and a 7-3 victory from Miles Cleveland at 125, but their youth — and lack of depth — doomed them in the end.

“I thought we battled pretty well,” Eudora coach Bill DeWitt said. “We weren’t going to win either of these wars, but we wanted to pick up some battles along the way. I think we did.”

Eudora and Baldwin now prepare for the Frontier League Tournament, which takes place all day Saturday at Gardner-Edgerton.
