Kerry supporters get organized in Lawrence

While Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry continues to win state Democratic Party primaries and caucuses, his supporters are just now getting organized in Lawrence.

Dan Watkins, a Lawrence attorney and Kerry supporter, said the Kerry organization was starting to come to life.

Watkins switched to Kerry after first throwing his support behind former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the party front-runner until Kerry won in Iowa.

“I’m like the button in Iowa, ‘Dated Dean, Married Kerry,'” Watkins said with a chuckle.

Kerry was forced to become more personable and work harder to win voters, and it has paid off in overcoming Dean’s once big lead in the polls, Watkins said.

“He’s older, wiser and a looser candidate who always had great qualities but didn’t come across as personable as Dean and Edwards did,” Watkins said.
