Former Kansas University baseball coach Bobby Randall has accepted a job as an assistant coach for the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
Randall, 55, will be the infield and hitting coach. He will leave next week for spring training in Arizona, just two weeks after signing the contract Friday.
"I'm excited about it," Randall said. "I'm excited to work with the young guys."
Randall compiled a 475-524-1 record in 18 seasons as a collegiate head coach, the last seven at KU. He resigned following the 2002 season and was replaced by Ritch Price.
Last spring, Randall served as the head baseball coach at Perry-Lecompton High. He had said he wanted to stay in Lawrence until his daughter, Kelsey, graduated from high school. She is a senior at Free State High.
Indianapolis contacted him in December, and, after several phone interviews, he was offered the job.
Randall played four years for the Minnesota Twins from 1976 to '80.
"I didn't know if I was really expecting to get back into pro baseball," Randall said.
Randall said for now his family would continue to live in Lawrence.
