KU baseball ties SHSU; softball splits

? Kansas University’s baseball team snapped its two-game losing streak, but not with a victory.

The Jayhawks tied Sam Houston State, 8-all, Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

KU (7-4-1) led most of the day.

The Jayhawks struck first in the top half of the first, when senior Ryan Baty, who went 3-for-5, drove in sophomore Ritchie Price from second with a single. Kansas added to its lead in the second with two runs on three consecutive base hits, including sophomore A.J. Van Slyke’s first career hit and an RBI double from sophomore Matt Baty.

The Bearkats (1-1-1) pulled to within one, 3-2, in the bottom of the third. The Jayhawks answered in the fifth, extending their lead to 4-2 with Price’s RBI single. The San Luis Obispo, Calif., native went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

KU junior Scott Sharpe, who made his third start of the season, worked three innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Kansas junior Ken Livesey pitched 12/3 innings in relief of Sharpe and did not allow a hit.

Senior Matt Tribble extended the Jayhawks’ lead to 7-2 in the seventh with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right.

The game was called at the end of the eighth to allow KU to catch its flight to Kansas City, Mo.

KU will travel Friday to Palo Alto, Calif., to face the sixth-ranked Stanford Cardinal.

Softball trips ASU, falls to Northwestern

Tempe, Ariz.– Kansas’ softball team rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Northwestern to rout No. 20 Arizona State, 5-1, Sunday during the final day of the Arizona Triangular at Farrington Stadium.

Kansas (2-4) jumped out to an early lead against ASU by scoring three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Nettie Fierros was hit by an ASU pitch and moved to second on a fielder’s choice by KU pitcher Kassie Humphreys. Senior Sandy Smith was hit with another pitch to load the bases, and with two outs sophomore Ashley Goodrich singled to drive in two runs. Freshman Nicole Washburn followed with a single to score Smith and give KU a 3-0 lead.

Kansas added a run in the top of the third when sophomore Serena Settlemier clubbed her third home run of the season, a solo shot over the left-field wall. Washburn collected her second RBI of the day in the sixth inning with a two-out double, scoring Goodrich, to increase KU’s lead to five.

Humphreys (1-2) kept the Sun Devils scoreless until the bottom of the seventh, when Valerie Sevilla drove in Kristin Crenshaw with a two-out double. KU retired the next batter, and Humphreys earned her first win in a KU uniform, striking out 11 and allowing just six hits in seven innings.

Earlier, Sheila McCorkle hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth for the only run.

Kansas will travel Friday to San Antonio, Texas.

KU’s Bookman sets Husker Invite record

Kansas University sprint standout Leo Bookman broke the Husker Invitational record in the 200-meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 20.97 Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb.

Bookman’s clocking eclipsed the old record of 21.21, set by BYU’s Frank Fredericks in 1991.

Ten men’s and women’s teams ranked in the Trackwire Top 25 as well as 13 NCAA defending champions were attended the meet at the Devaney Center.

KU freshman Benson Chesang finished second in the 3,000 with a time of 8:11.13, and Jeremy Mims was fourth in the 800 in 1:51.10.

Among the KU women, Charisse Bacchus finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19-93/4, a season best. Stacy Keller was fourth in the 400 with a season-best time of 55.72. And Kim Clark was sixth in the 800 in 2:11.96.

The Jayhawks’ 4×400 relay team of Duchess Williams, Octavia Garrett, Clark and Keller finished second with a time of 3:44.29.
