KBI investigations urged in inmate deaths

? Two senators introduced a bill Friday requiring the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to investigate the deaths of anyone held in state prisons and jails.

The measure would require that the KBI make its findings available to the chairmen of the House and Senate Judiciary committees. The findings also would become open records.

Sens. Derek Schmidt, R-Independence, and Anthony Hensley, D-Topeka, sponsored the bill, which was sought by Topeka civil rights advocate Sonny Scroggins.

Currently, deaths in prisons and jails are investigated by local agencies, with the KBI available to assist.
