Athletes of week

City

Adam Davis, Seabury

Class: Sophomore

Sport: Basketball

The week: After leading the Seahawks to their first victory last week with a 25-point effort, Davis carried the rejuvenated team on his shoulders, catapulting Seabury to two more victories and a school-record three-game winning streak. Davis contributed 12 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists in a 35-28 victory Friday over Flint Hills Christian, then scored 18 points — including a pair of three-pointers — in a 46-36 win Tuesday over Kansas School for the Deaf. With Davis leading the way, Seabury is rolling into the stretch run of its schedule.

Comment: “The team this year has matured as he’s matured,” Seabury coach Marcus Heckman said. “He’s been the catalyst of the winning streak. It’s been his recognizing that the team needs the leader and the team needs a scorer. He’s been big for us.”

Area

Derek Lang, Baldwin

Class: Senior

Sport: Wrestling

The week: Lang continues to punish opponents, and what has come of it is a 33-2 overall record, among the best in the area. Lang placed first at the loaded Baldwin Invitational Tournament last weekend, going 5-0. His last victory was a 3-2 decision over Holton’s Jesse Strawn, who was 27-0 at the time, and previously had beaten Lang at the Eudora Tournament of Champions in December. Lang has 19 falls on the year, and is ranked third in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Assn.

Comment: “Derek has had a real exciting year,” Baldwin coach Kit Harris said. “He trains hard every day and has been our team leader. He is a full-timer, is real competitive, and is real good about helping the younger wrestlers too.”
