Barrymore receives her star

Los Angeles — Drew Barrymore received a star Tuesday on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame as a crowd of hundreds looked on.

The ceremony was designed to promote the release of “50 First Dates,” the new romantic comedy with Adam Sandler in which she plays a chronic amnesiac.

She is the fifth member of the Barrymore acting dynasty to receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, after father John D. Barrymore and grandfather John Barrymore, whose siblings were Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore.

“I’m really honored to be with my family. That’s the coolest thing for me,” she said.

Singers’ mom a fugitive

Marathon, Fla. — The mother of pop singers Nick and Aaron Carter failed to appear in court for a scheduled arraignment on a battery charge, and a bench warrant for her arrest was immediately issued.

Jane Carter was charged with attacking the girlfriend of her estranged husband, Robert Carter, last month. Sheriff’s officials in Monroe County said she broke a window to enter her husband’s home and attacked the couple while they slept.

Carter allegedly pulled 29-year-old Ginger Elrod from the bed by her hair and beat her, sheriff’s officials said.

Her $5,000 bond has been forfeited because of the missed court appearance, officials said.

A message left for her publicist was not returned Tuesday.

Miss USA courts Paris

New York — Despite being tall, leggy and glamorous, socialite Paris Hilton doesn’t exactly dress or act like a pageant queen.

Donald Trump, however, thinks Hilton could be a pageant host, and is negotiating with her to host the Miss USA Pageant, which he owns.

Trump said Hilton’s infamous Internet sex tape doesn’t bother him.

“I’ve known Paris since she was a little girl,” Trump said. “She’s a fine girl … I think she will give the pageant its highest TV ratings.”

The 53rd annual Miss USA Pageant is scheduled to air April 12 on NBC, live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

Whale memorialized in U.S.

Newport, Ore. — A memorial service for Keiko the killer whale is set for Feb. 20 at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, where the six-ton hero of the “Free Willy” films lived from 1996 to 1998.

Keiko died Dec. 12, likely from pneumonia, in remote Taknes Bay, where he’d lived after swimming to Norway from Iceland in 2002.

The orca, about 26, was buried in a pasture a few yards from where he died. The Dec. 15 burial was done at night and kept secret to avoid media attention.

Visitors to the Feb. 20 service can sign a memory book, a chaplain will deliver a eulogy, former keepers will offer remembrances and a retrospective photo exhibit will adorn the walls.

The aquarium also will display the sketch of a bronze sculpture that it plans to commission as a permanent tribute.
