State officials to join heart health campaign

? The American Heart Assn. will sponsor several events in February in Topeka as part of its “Go Red for Women” campaign. The campaign urges women to make heart health a priority.

On Thursday, Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is scheduled to proclaim Friday “Wear Red for Women Day” and will urge Kansans to wear red, the color designated by the association to represent women and heart disease.

From 8:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 21, legislators will have the opportunity to undergo stroke screenings to assess their risk for stroke, and the women’s caucus will attend a luncheon to learn more about heart disease and the association’s campaign.

The association reports that heart disease and stroke kill more women than the next seven causes of death combined and nearly twice as many as cancer.
