Gene Allen Carr

? Services for Gene Allen Carr, 82, Richmond, Mo., will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Thurman’s Funeral Home in Richmond.

Mr. Carr died Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Ray County Hospital in Richmond.

He was born March 11, 1921, in Memphis, Tenn., the son of Elmer Earl and Elsie Louise (Allen) Carr.

Mr. Carr was an announcer at WHBQ radio in Memphis after high school. During World War II, he was an area intelligence officer with the Office of Strategic Services, with India and southeast Asia as his areas of expertise. After the war, he received a first-class engineer’s license and helped install radio station WDIA in Memphis, where he served as the station’s first program director. He then was program director for WDOD in Chattanooga, Tenn.

He was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Hixson, Tenn., and was active in Little Theater in Memphis and Chattanooga.

He moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1969, to work for The Calvin Company, where he wrote, produced and directed award-winning industrial films and commercials. In 1985, he became a writer and director for Caterpillar Inc.’s advertising department in Peoria, Ill., He retired in 1996 and moved to Lawrence, where he was announcer for KANU’s “Imagination Workshop.” He moved to Richmond in 1998.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Beverly Carr, of the home; two sons, Stephen Alan and Robert Allen; two daughters, Meredith Carr Bennett and Susan Louise Scott; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 2 p.m. Tuesday until service time at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Hixson, in care of the funeral home, 507 E. Main St., Richmond MO 64085.
