Woodling: Going bowling with Big 12

You won’t have any difficulty finding a Big 12 Conference football team on television during the eight-day stretch from Tuesday through Jan. 4. All seven Big 12 teams that qualified for bowl games will be in action during that span.

The seven bowls run the spectrum from the bottom of the barrel — Iowa State in the Independence Bowl against a Mid-American Conference team — to the national championship game between Oklahoma and Southern Cal.

Of the seven Big 12 qualifiers, Kansas played five during the regular season and went 0-5. The Jayhawks bowed to Iowa State, Colorado, Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma. KU did not play Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

Independence Bowl

Tuesday, Shreveport, La.

Iowa State vs. Miami of Ohio

5:30 p.m. (ESPN)

Let’s see … Iowa State edged Kansas, 13-7. Kansas flogged Toledo, 63-14. And Miami bowed to Toledo, 35-27. Looks good for the Cyclones, doesn’t it? RedHawks, under lame duck coach Terry Hoeppner who took the Indiana job, rely on quarterback Josh Betts (22 touchdown passes) and tailback Luke Clemens (12 rushing TDs). Iowa State’s offense is the equivalent of Shreveport as a tourist attraction.

What to look for: Cold weather, a calculating ISU defense and nostalgia for the Poulan weed eater.

Iowa State's Stevie Hicks, front left, stretches with his teammates. The Cyclones practiced Saturday at Shreveport, La., in preparation for Tuesday's Independence Bowl against Miami of Ohio.

Houston Bowl

Wednesday, Houston

Colorado vs. Texas-El Paso

3:30 p.m. (ESPN)

What’s this? UTEP in a bowl game? This is only the third bowl in the last 37 years for the Miners, who once rivaled Kansas State as the worst college football program in America. Mike Price, booted at Alabama, has reinvented himself on the Rio Grande, thanks mainly to quarterback Jordan Palmer, younger brother of former Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer.

What to look for: Colorado displaying a total lack of interest after the kickoff.

Alamo Bowl

Wednesday, San Antonio

Oklahoma State vs. Ohio State

7 p.m. (ESPN)

Ah, just what college football has coveted for years — a battle of O-States. Buckeyes are another one of those Big 10 schools that draw six-digit home crowds, but never win enough games to satisfy the boosters. Oklahoma State can’t match Buckeyes’ tradition, but Cowboys think they can run roughshod over anybody.

What to look for: Cowboys giving the ball to tailback Vernand Morency and passing just enough to prove they aren’t coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg.

Holiday Bowl

Thursday, San Diego

Texas Tech vs. California

7 p.m. (ESPN)

California loses one game to No. 1-ranked Southern Cal — by less than a TD at that — and the Golden Bears are dispatched to San Diego to play Texas Tech, a team with four losses. Well, nobody said life (or the BCS) was fair. Bears either will vent frustrations on Red Raiders or go into hibernation.

What to look for: A looooonnnnnnggggg game. Tech’s Sonny Cumbie and Cal’s Aaron Rodgers probably will throw 80 times between them.

Cotton Bowl

Saturday, Dallas

Texas A&M vs. Tennessee

10 a.m. (FOX)

Brunch in Big D pits Reggie McNeal, the Big 12’s most improved quarterback, against Tennessee’s … uh, well, three QBs had multiple starts for the Vols, two of them freshmen. Tennessee will relay primarily on tailback tandem of Gerald Riggs Jr. (son of the former Pro Bowler with the Falcons and Redskins) and Cedric Houston (no relation to Sam) and hope Aggies miss their wake-up call.

What to look for: Seemingly endless promos for FOX’s Sunday NFL games.

Rose Bowl

Saturday, Pasadena, Calif.

Texas vs. Michigan

3:30 p.m. (ABC)

Hard to believe these two traditional powers never have met but, hey, it’s a big country. Michigan has super freshmen at quarterback (Chad Henne) and tailback (Mike Hart) while Texas counters with super soph Vince Young at QB and super senior Cedric Benson at tailback. Longhorns have underrated receivers, but no one as good as Wolverines’ Braylon Edwards (87 catches).

What to look for: Ear plugs so you don’t have to listen to the Michigan band playing the dreadful “Hail to the Victors” every three minutes.

Orange Bowl

Jan. 4, Miami

Southern Cal vs. Oklahoma

7 p.m. (ABC)

Battle of unbeatens. Battle of Heisman Trophy winners at quarterback. Sure beats those bad Tuesday night ABC sitcoms. USC’s Matt Leinart and OU’s Jason White should cancel each other. Difference may be at tailback where Trojans’ Reggie Bush is a better receiver than Sooners’ Adrian Peterson.

What to look for: Oklahoma’s Ruf Neks trying to spook Tommy Trojan and his horse, Traveler, by firing blanks from their ear-splitting carbines.
