Snail deters trout stocking

Trout stockings in some southwest Kansas trout waters were suspended in December because of a freeloading snail species.

New Zealand mudsnails were found at the Colorado hatchery that was providing fish for some Kansas locations.

Wildlife and Parks biologists are concerned the snails could have been imported with the fish. One trout fishing location has been treated to kill any snails, as well as the trout.

The Centennial Pond, adjacent to the Pratt Fish Hatchery, was a critical location because of the potential for the snails to infiltrate hatchery ponds.

Other locations that received fish from the infected Colorado hatchery will be monitored carefully.

Designated waters throughout the state — including Lake Henry in Clinton State Park — are stocked regularly beginning in October.

The trout season will run through April 15. Anyone fishing for trout at one of these waters during the season must possess a trout stamp, in addition to a fishing license.
