Effie Lila Hess

Services for Effie Lila Hess, 101, Oskaloosa, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home in Lawrence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Hess died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at Hickory Pointe Care and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa.

She was born Nov. 24, 1903, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Theodore and Lula Dyson Uttinger. She was a lifelong resident of Lawrence.

Mrs. Hess worked in Washington at the shipyards for 18 months during World War II, where she became a certified welder. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She married John William Hess. He died Nov. 23, 1965.

A son, John Hess Jr., died in May 2004, and two grandsons died earlier.

Survivors include two sons, Chester Hess, Hemphill, Texas, and Albert Hess, Ozawkie; a brother, Wallace Uttinger, Emporia; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to Jefferson County Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home.
