Cowboys focused on Alamo Bowl
STILLWATER, OKLA. ? Oklahoma State on Monday held its final practice before leaving town to continue preparations for the Alamo Bowl.
As players finished practicing in Boone Pickens Stadium, a pile of blocking pads, water coolers and other equipment was being stacked outside the stadium in preparation for the team’s trip to San Antonio.
After taking today off, the Cowboys (7-4) will leave Stillwater on Wednesday and hold private practices at a San Antonio high school every day leading up to the Dec. 29 game against Ohio State (7-4).
“We’ve still got a lot to work on, but we got a lot of work done,” tailback Vernand Morency said after practice. “We’re still rough around the edges.”
Given more than three weeks to prepare for the game, Morency said the team had been working on finer details that it might have overlooked during a busy game week.
“I like where we’re at,” Cowboys coach Les Miles said. “The majority of our workload is in front of us. We’re working with a lot of the timing that needs to take place in the running game, the passing game and kicking …
“We’re kind of back to that and now we have to fine-tune it and get ready for a very, very talented football team.”
Miles said the extra time also allowed the team to heal a little bit. Morency, who missed the team’s next-to-last game against Baylor because of a sore knee, and cornerback Darrent Williams, who missed most of the second half of the season because of a broken forearm, both have had time to recover.
He said some players also were battling the flu.

“I think the season has a way of wearing on a body,” Miles said. “At this point in time, I’m not worried about that. I’m ready to prepare and get ready to win.”
After a weeklong layoff for final exams, Miles said it would take time for the team to get back to its usual tempo in practice and regain its timing on certain plays.
“We’re on pace. We’re not ready to play yet,” Miles said. “Certainly, we don’t need to be ready to play at this point. A lot of guys are battling the flu and the things that come with the winter months.
“We’re getting better, and that’s what we need to do.”
For senior guard Sam Mayes, it was his final practice at Boone Pickens Stadium.
“It’s not hit me yet,” said Mayes, an offensive guard. “Let me walk off that field in San Antonio, then it’ll get to me a little bit. I’m still a Cowboy. I’ve got a couple more weeks to be one.”
