Stanford stuffs Missouri; Kansas State cruises

? Stanford’s Candice Wiggins had a double victory Saturday.

Wiggins had 12 points and five rebounds, helping No. 2 Stanford beat Missouri, 71-55. After the game, she learned the Stanford volleyball team, which she took a red-shirt with this season, won the NCAA volleyball title.

“I started tearing up,” Wiggins said. “It’s just so amazing, knowing these girls. I’m so happy for them.”

Wiggins, Stanford’s top scorer at 17.1 points a game, led the Cardinal with eight points at halftime. Brook Smith scored 16 points and dominated in the second half, shooting 6-for-8 for Stanford (8-0).

Kelley Suminski added 13 on her 22nd birthday.

Megan Roney led Missouri (4-5) with 13 points. LaToya Bond, the Tigers’ second-leading scorer (12.9), was held scoreless in the first half and finished with seven points.

Missouri coach Cindy Stein, whose team faces national contenders in Big 12 play every season, called Stanford one of the nation’s top teams.

“I think we’re gonna see them in Indianapolis in the Final Four,” Stein said.

No. 25 Kansas State 71, Alabama 52

Springfield, Mo. — Megan Mahoney scored 22 points to lead Kansas State in the Triple Crown Classic at Southwest Missouri State. Claire Coggins scored 14 points, Laurie Koehn added 13, and Twiggy McIntyre had 12 for Kansas State (6-2). After taking a 30-29 halftime lead, the Wildcats went on a 24-7 run to take a 54-36 lead with 8:23 left behind nine points by Mahoney.

No. 12 Texas Tech 87, Arkansas State 53

Las Vegas — Alesha Robertson scored 21 points, and Chesley Dabbs added 17 to lead Texas Tech in a Duel in the Desert first-round game. Judith Smith added 12 points for Texas Tech, while Cisti Greenwalt tallied 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, and Erin Grant had 10 points and a team-high six assists.

Creighton 58, Nebraska 57

Omaha, Neb. — Laura Spanheimer scored 21 points and swiped five steals, leading the Creighton women’s basketball team over in-state rival Nebraska (6-4). The Bluejays (5-3) led 58-51 with just under three minutes to play after a second three-pointer by Christy Erickson.
