Veritas boys hold on for victory

? Veritas Christian tightened its defense on 6-foot-7 Billy Davenport in the second half and scored a 63-54 high school boys basketball victory over Topeka Cornerstone on Friday night.

Davenport scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, but Veritas held him scoreless in the third quarter and most of the fourth period.

“We did a much better job denying him the ball in the second half,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “We really played well.”

Derek Shapiro and Andrew Bartlow led Veritas with 13 points apiece.

Mark Randtke added 12 points and seven rebounds, Paul Kempf had 12 points, Casey Woods had nine points, and Noah Barclay added four points and four steals for the Eagles.

Veritas (5-1) will play Jan. 4 at Topeka Cair Paravel.

“We’ll take this week off, then we’ll be practicing hard after the Christmas weekend,” Bennett said.
