Arctic conditions cool off Lawrence

An icy blast from the north brought arctic-like conditions to Lawrence this morning. Shortly before 7 a.m., the city’s wind chill was 2 degrees, the same temperature recorded this morning at the North Pole.

“This is the coldest we’ve been in 303 days,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

As of 8:15 a.m., the wind chill had risen to 4 degrees, but the morning low for Lawrence had dropped to 12 degrees, tying with Emporia for the coldest spot in Kansas. The last time it was this cold was on Feb.15, when the temperature dropped to 9, Schack said.

Temperatures were expected to rise to 30 degrees by noon, reaching a high of 38 by mid-afternoon, under sunny skies, she said

Overnight, skies will continue to be clear, with the low dropping to 17 by early Wednesday morning, she said. Wednesday will be warmer, with the high reaching 48 and southerly winds 10-15 mph, she said.

Thursday’s morning low will be 27, with Thursday’s high reaching 42 under partly cloudy skies.
