Warm today, but cold front sweeping in tonight

Ken Jennings probably knows the answer is “What’s an Alberta Clipper?” But if you’re not a Jeopardy super-contestant, Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist, can fill you in — that’s what you call the quick-moving Canadian cold front that will sweep into the Lawrence area tonight.

The Alberta Clipper will bring windy, chilly and cloudy conditions — “a triple dose of winter weather,” Schack said.

Today’s weather will be much milder by comparison, with sunshine and temperatures climbing into the high 50s, she said.

At 8:30 a.m., the temperature had climbed to 31 after bottoming out overnight at 28.

“It’s cold enough to grab your coat on the way out,” Schack said. There was some fog this morning in low-lying areas, reducing visibility down to one-fourth of a mile, she said.

Today’s temperature was expected to rise to 52 by noon and will top out at 57 by 4 p.m., she said.

Tonight, the cold front that formed over Alberta, Canada, will bluster its way down through the Midwest to the Lawrence area, bringing strong winds and cold temperatures, she said.

“It focuses its cold air just to the east of us, but we still have to deal with the strong winds,” she said. Winds will be gusting up to 20 mph overnight, with Friday’s morning low dropping to 33, she said.

“It will feel blustery out there Friday,” Schack said. “It does look like a very winter-like day.”

Friday’s winds will be from the northwest, 10 to 20 mph, gusting to 30 mph. The high will reach 41 under mostly cloudy skies, she said.

Overnight, the temperature bottoms out to 24 by early Saturday morning.

“We’ll bring back the sunshine by Saturday afternoon,” Schack said. Winds will be from the south and southwest, 5 to 15 mph., with the high reaching 54 Saturday afternoon, she said.
