Sooners hold off Purdue

? With Oklahoma struggling and Purdue charging, Sooners coach Kelvin Sampson had a simple answer.

“Every dead ball, we called a set for (Kevin) Bookout,” Sampson said. “He was our first option on everything we did. I told them I didn’t want any shots unless they went inside-out.”

Boy, did it work.

Bookout scored all 12 of his points in the second half, leading Oklahoma to a 66-48 victory over Purdue on Wednesday night.

“You would have thought he scored 30 points,” Sampson said of Bookout’s impact. “He only scored 12.”

The Sooners (5-1) won their third game in a row with tough defense and timely offense.

Bookout was 0-for-4 in the first half, but hit two nifty baby-hook shots to answer a furious Purdue rally and hand the Boilermakers (1-5) their fourth straight loss.

“In the first half, Kevin wasn’t noticeable, but we were hitting everything we threw up. You knew that wasn’t going to last,” Sampson said.

The Sooners hit six of their first eight three-pointers in the first half, then lost the range as Purdue made a comeback.

Brandon McKnight led Purdue with 15 points. He hit two three-pointers in a row to spark a 12-0 run midway through the second half.

Minnesota 57, Nebraska 48

Lincoln, Neb. — Jeff Hagen hit a layup and a free throw with 2:55 left to put Minnesota ahead to stay, and Vincent Grier made two three-pointers to seal the win. The Golden Gophers (4-3) closed with a 17-3 run that provided their first non-conference road win since December 2000. Nebraska (3-2) lost for the first time in 17 home non-conference games. Grier led all scorers with 17 points.
