Pet cell phones are more than a novelty

New technologies are promising to make pet identification tags and neighborhood posters a thing of the past in finding a lost pet.

A new wireless technology utilizes a global positioning system attached to your dog’s collar to call the owner’s cell phone if the pet leaves the yard. The system also tracks the pet’s location. Should Fido get lost, anyone can press a button on the device and the owner’s number is automatically dialed. The New York Times reports a cat version will be available in 2005.

PetsMobility Networks Inc. says the PetsCell technology will allow pet owners to talk with their pets as well as allowing owners to request assistance should they require help. The PetsCell, two-way communication device will also be available with an optional GPS tracking device and a fiber optic camera for search and rescue operations.

Will dogs do like teens and resort to cell phones to communicate? Will the cameras give us an unwanted view of some of our pet’s activities of daily living we’d rather not see?

For pets that can hear the treat drawer open in the next zip code but can’t seem to hear us screaming our lungs out at the back door to come in for a bath, pet cell phones will give all new meaning to the famed saying, “Can you hear me now?”
