Club seeks referees for youth basketball

The Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence needs volunteer referees for its after-school basketball games on Wednesdays. Participating children are mostly ages 9 to 11, grades three through six. Referees must know the basic rules of the game and will support good sportsmanship among players.

Games are from 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. every Wednesday at several schools. At least three referees are needed every Wednesday. The league will begin Dec. 15 and end Feb. 23. For more information, call Roger Ross, program manager at the Boys and Girls Club, at 841-6854 or 423-3774.

Immediate volunteer needs

The Salvation Army and Toys for Tots holiday gift program are seeking toy donations and volunteers. New toys may be donated at the Salvation Army, 946 N.H.

Volunteers are needed to sort donations by age categories Tuesday through Friday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds in preparation for the Christmas Toy Shop. Volunteer escorts also are needed to assist clients at the toy shop Dec. 15-17. For more information, call 843-4188.

  • The Free Community Holiday Dinner will be served on Christmas Day at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt. Donations of pies are needed. Contact Brower Burchill, 843-9199, for more information.
  • The Safe Winter Walkways project is recruiting volunteers to assist Lawrence senior citizens or people with disabilities with snow-shoveling.

Volunteers will be matched with a person for the winter and are asked to remove snow from the public sidewalk and shovel a path from the front door to the street after each snowfall. Volunteers should call 832-3338 to sign up.

Safe Winter Walkways is a partnership between the city of Lawrence and the Roger Hill Volunteer Center.

  • The Roger Hill Volunteer Center has published its annual How to Help at the Holidays brochure, which provides information on many volunteer and holiday-donation opportunities in the community. The brochure details how volunteers may assist charitable organizations and adopt-a-family and adopt-a-child programs, and when volunteers are needed to assist with free holiday community meals.
