Orange gear mandatory

Firearms deer season in Kansas started Wednesday and will run through next Sunday.

All deer hunters must wear a minimum of 200 square inches of hunter orange clothing — half visible from the front and half visible from the back.

A hunter orange hat is also required.

Also, all persons assisting firearms deer hunters must wear hunter orange.

Firearms deer permit holders who prefer to use a bow during this season must wear orange, as well.

(Statewide archery permits may not be used during the firearms season.)

While upland game and other hunters are not required to wear orange, it is recommended at all times, especially during the firearms deer season.

Fluorescent orange makes hunters much more visible, especially at dawn and dusk, and its use is attributed to reducing hunter-related accidents.

In addition, hunters should always be sure of their target and what lies beyond it.
