Jayhawks rally, but fall in 5 games

? They out-killed, out-dug, and out-blocked the Washington Huskies.

It wasn’t enough.

Kansas University’s volleyball team could not overcome an early two-game deficit and ended its season on Saturday at Edmunson Pavilion.

The Jayhawks fought back, but did not have enough to overtake the Huskies in the final game, losing, 34-32, 30-26, 25-30, 26-30, 15-12.

“Washington’s a better team,” Kansas coach Ray Bechard said. “They were able to stay composed, and they certainly showed it tonight.”

The Jayhawks compiled 102 digs, 83 kills, and 18 blocks, but did not have an answer for the Huskies’ powerful serves.

The final game provided the most excitement. The Jayhawks took a 9-7 lead, but the Huskies rallied behind the support of a raucous crowd, and the Jayhawks couldn’t respond.

Kansas outside hitter Paula Caten recorded 24 kills, and libero Jill Dorsey broke Kansas’ school record for career digs with 22 to lead the Jayhawks.

Washington outside hitter Brie Haggerty’s 18 kills and outside hitter Sanja Tomasevic’s 27 digs helped the Huskies hold off the Jayhawks’ late surge

Kansas finally came alive in the third game after Ashley Michaels’ thunderous kill ended a long rally, giving Kansas a 21-16 lead, finally moving the momentum in the Jayhawks’ favor, but it didn’t last.

The Jayhawks finished the season at 19-12, and the Huskies advanced to the regionals of the NCAA volleyball tournament and will play St. Mary’s on Friday.

“I’ll remember the way we fought as a team,” libero Jill Dorsey said. “We put it all out there.”
