Kirk Heinz and Julie Goans-Heinz announce the adoption of their daughter, Jessica Ann Goans-Heinz, born May 8, 2004, in Guatemala. She was welcomed home on Nov. 19, 2004. Zachary and Liesl Faircloth, Elk River, Minn., announce the birth of their son James Colby Faircloth, born Nov. 11, 2004, in Elk River, Minn. James has a brother Gatlin Pierce Faircloth, 3, and a sister Miranda Rose Faircloth, 1.

Noah Edge, De Soto, and Melissa Potts, Hamilton, Mo., announce the birth of a son, Zayden Titus Edge, born Oct. 27, 2004, at Cameron Regional Hospital in Cameron, Mo.

Brenda and Joey Frost, Eudora, announce the birth of their daughter, Elexis Renee Frost, born Oct. 27, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Elexis has a brother, Kale, 2. Grandparents are Joe and Sandy Deshazer and Jon and Jan Nixon, all of Eudora. Great-grandparents are Lawrence and Rilla Nixon, Eudora; Dale and Charlotte Frost, De Soto; and Dorothy Zimmerman, Lawrence.

Phillip Garito, Lawrence, was honored on Veterans Day by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for following in the footsteps of a relative in armed forces service. He is a member of the Professional Officer Corps in the university’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program.

Sarah Elizabeth Charnes has been named executive vice president of Sigma Kappa, Delta Theta Chapter for 2005 at Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo. She is completing her term as vice president of membership. She is the daughter of John and Suzanne Charnes, Lawrence.

Gabe Murphy won first place in the high school men’s division of the student auditions sponsored by the West-Central Region of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. The event was Nov. 5-6 at Emporia State University.

The annual program attracts more than 300 singers from Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming, with divisions representing levels of study from high school through graduate school. Gabe studies voice with William Gaeddert, Lawrence. Gabe is the son of Jack and Rosemary Murphy, Baldwin, and attends Bishop Seabury Academy.

Five Lawrence schools garnered team trophies in the Wakarusa Valley School Chess Tournament on Nov. 13. Southwest Junior High School won first place in the K-8 Division and South Junior High School claimed third. In the K-6 Division, Quail Run School placed third. In the K-3 Division, Wakarusa Valley School placed second and Sunflower School placed third. Southwest seventh-grader Thomas Reams also won an individual first-place trophy in the K-8 Division.

Lawrence medal winners in the K-8 Division were: Kellen Cross, Southwest, third; Peter Lesslie, Southwest, seventh; Roy Wedge, Central Junior High School, 11th; Douglas Rawlings, South, 13th; Jessica Newman, South, 15th; Sonal Chakrasali, South, 17th; and Nate McFadden, South, 18th.

K-6 Division medals went to: Luke Lesslie, Quail Run, sixth; Kenny Blevins, Wakarusa, eighth; Katie Conard, Quail Run, 10th; Austin Clapp, Quail Run, 13th; Andrei Elliott, Quail Run, 16th; and Hyrum Richardson, Wakarusa, 20th.

K-3 medals were given to: Cole Reams, Quail Run, fifth; Apramay Mishra, Sunflower, seventh; Darren Rawlings, Wakarusa, 11th; James Skala, Sunflower, 13th; Robert Newman, Wakarusa, 16th; Owen McFadden, Wakarusa, 17th; Dillon Schroeder, Wakarusa, 18th; Kaustubh Nimkar, Sunflower, 19th; and Chloe Gilligan, Wakarusa, 20th.

The 28th annual Hubbard reunion of the descendants of the late James Willard and Mary Ann “Braucht” Hubbard was Nov. 7 at the Linwood Community Center. There were 100 people in attendance. Hosts were the John Siscoe families. The reunion included a carry-in basket dinner and short business meeting.

The reunion included families of the late T. Edward Hubbard, Frank Hubbard, Hattie “Hubbard” Ward and Adeline “Hubbard” Green.
