Tempers flare as UNI trips ISU

? Northern Iowa burned Iowa State’s zone with sizzling perimeter shooting in its biggest victory ever over the Cyclones.

The only thing hotter were the two coaches, who got into a shouting match midway through the second half.

Erik Crawford scored a career-high 28 points, and Ben Jacobson added 27, also a career best, to lead Northern Iowa past Iowa State, 99-82, on Wednesday night. Freshman Eric Coleman also played a huge role for the Panthers (3-1), finishing with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Things heated up away from the ball after Iowa State’s Jared Homan knocked UNI’s Grant Stout to the floor and was called for an intentional foul. Homan immediately helped Stout up and some Northern Iowa players patted Homan on the back, but Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan and McDermott began shouting at each other from their benches.

Morgan appeared to swear at McDermott and McDermott yelled back. Iowa State’s Curtis Stinson and Northern Iowa’s Brooks McKowen had to be separated near midcourt and both coaches were given technical fouls.

“I think it just got a little heated,” said McDermott, whose team was leading 69-41 at the time.

Homan led Iowa State (3-1) with 23 points.
